Miss Terry Gillian
Season 5, Episode 4
Cause of Death: Catamount
As the five horses tromped away through the woods, Terry considered her options. She was well hidden, she could wait here, and if the catamount came close, well, Bessie could do her job. But if something went wrong with the trap, if the four idiots did something dumb, if Ramon got stuck, if Vivian or Alice or Carlton were attacked, with no way to defend themselves...
She made her decision. She left her hiding place in the hollow log, and started, slowly, towards the rendezvous. She never saw the shadow up above. She didn't notice the crack of a branch as it jumped lower, and closer. And when the catamount dug its claws into her back, she didn't even have time to shout, "Where's my shoe!" before it tore out her throat.
But even in death, she never let go of her gun. And a few more bloodstains joined on Bessie, and the simple soldier was no more.

Carlton was the first to stop, a look of horror and disgust etched on his face. It was then that Alice saw the grisly sight, the remains of a woman who, not a half hour before, had been alive.
This wasn't supposed to happen Alice thought, feeling the color drain from her own face. It's all gone wrong. She and Vivian were supposed to be okay.
A half hour ago, Miss Terry had set off into the woods with a cocked gun and a look of grim determination. She knew what lay in there, knew the danger of what she was doing, but she did it anyway.
"We should take her back to town." Alice heard herself suggest. Carlton and Vivian didn't argue. Dozens of questions swirled in her head. Who exactly was this Miss Terry? Did she have any family? What had she seen in Gomorra that gave her that willingness to walk into danger? Or had she always been that brave?
After the body had been wrapped and secured on Vivian's horse, the trio headed back to town. "What do we do now?" asked Vivian.
"We regroup, think of a new plan, and kill this monster," Alice replied. Now a grim determination filled her. She would not let Miss Terry's sacrifice be for nothing. She would honor Miss Terry's memory, despite hardly knowing her.

It was night time, and the stars were out. The only other light that could Carlton could see was his own little camp fire. He finished his meal and was hunkered down and would let the fire die out for the night.
Die out . . .
Carlton glanced at the guns, the knives and the shotgun. That shotgun, the one with old dried blood on it. Carlton was good at noticing those small details; sometimes he even knew what the "big picture" those details drew. He had a pretty good idea what the story behind "Bessie" was.
For the first time, Carlton didn't seem to mind that story at all. Carlton shuddered and began his nightly prayers.
"O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my
sins because of Thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend
Thee, my God, Who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly
resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near
occasions of sin.
"Amen."

Tom 09/08/2010 21:14 hope is also quite comfortable in greenfield these days, in a largely gamer (and thus deadlands) safe place.
Mio 09/08/2010 15:49 I wish the forum were like Facebook. I want to "Like" everything. I would never have to have a genuine thought again.
Jorge Mantoya 09/08/2010 13:33 Hope dangles on a string, like slow-spinning redemption. Winding in and winding out, the shine of it has caught my eye...
Bish 09/08/2010 13:26 No distance is ever safe enough. The only distance that is remotely safe is six feet, and THAT if only chased by two bullets.
The Gentleman Masher 09/08/2010 13:21 I think so. That may almost be a safe enough distance.
Gidim 09/08/2010 12:11 Doesn't she live in Rochester now?
GM Doppelganger 09/07/2010 23:04 Per player request, Hope will be present at the start of Manhattan, how long Hope survives is up to you.
The Gentleman Masher 09/07/2010 17:48 I love tumblebleeds. They're some of the nicest of the things Deadlands can throw at you.
GM Doppelganger 09/07/2010 14:40 If the existence of tumblebleeds in the new town is enough to shatter your hope it wasn't going to last long anyway
Tom 09/07/2010 11:24 ..and it's over. So that's what hope felt like, I always wondered.
